Michael W. Boyer Age: 35 Wilmington, DE - Black Sash, 1st level

Having a healthy body goes hand and hand with having a healthy mind. In order to obtain a healthy body and mind, I love practicing Hung Gar. Due to my age and the aches, pains, and injuries that come along with it, I couldn't’t see myself pounding weights at a gym or doing the wide array of kicks most martial arts styles use to get back into shape. Hung Gar was a great alternative. It places emphasis on strong stances, iron-hard blocks, ambidexterity, sweeps, locks (Chin-Na), and deceptive hand techniques more than kicks and that seemed to suite me best. It also utilizes weapons, forms, and other apparatus like the iron rings as a substitute for weights to increase strength and stamina. I knew that this type of training on a consistent basis would increase my overall health in more ways than I could imagine. Anyone who watches a typical Hung Gar practice at the kwoon will tell you, if you honestly participate, one can’t help but to get in shape. I began taking Hung gar because I wanted to increase my knowledge in authentic martial arts. To do so I needed to study under a knowledgeable teacher with a lineage and unquestionable credentials. I found this at the academy with my Sifu (teacher) John Jurewicz. I had studied Chinese Goju Karate as a kid and enjoyed the challenge, hard work, and sense of accomplishment the training brought. I have found the same, if not more, during my 4-5 years of training in Hung Gar. I take great pride in seeing the results of all my hard work. I have noticed my strength, coordination, balance, and knowledge of self-defense has grown immensely. I have also gained a better understanding of my physical and mental limitations and how to improve them. I find I am constantly challenging myself to learn new techniques, improve on the one’s I already know, and to work on my patience because you never do a technique right the first time. Learning Hung Gar has made me a better person.

Favorite Hung Gar Forms: Taming the Tiger Fist Set (Gung Gee Fook Fu Kuen) and Lau Family Fist Set (Lau Ga Kuen) Favorite Hung Gar Weapons: Double Butterfly Knife Set and Kwan Dao Favorite Hung Gar Movements: Tiger and Dragon

Phil Chen - Si Hing

Phil Chen Age: 38 - Black Sash, 1st level

Phil regularly runs and weight trains as well as partaking in 5 Ks - usually finishing in one of the upper percentiles. He came to kung fu after studying korean styles for over ten years. SiHing Phil was amazed at the details and multiple applications associated with each move. He continues to be fascinated by the body hardening practices such as iron palm.

Phil's favorite hung gar form/weapon/movement: Five animals & Five elements. "There is a lot incorporated into this form that is not obvious; a lot of applications in this form that I have yet to un-earth".

SiHing Phil also does a wonderful job at being the co-leader of our Lion Dance Troupe. Phil learned the traditional FoShan Lion Dance at the famous Chin Woo Athletic Association in FoShan, mainland China.

Favorite Weapon: Tiger Tail BroadSword because it is very fluid and yet also very aggressive.

Favorite Movement is Drunken Eight Immortals because it is very simple, very direct, perfect for someone of my stature.

Mark Scott, Age 37, Black Sash, 1st level

Mark has been training in martial arts since 1989 and achieved high ranks in two other styles before discovering Kung Fu in ~1999.  “What I like most about martial arts is the art of movement, learning how to move my body with efficiency and power.  I had studied several other styles in depth including Chinese Kenpo, Tai Chi, and Arnis before joining Sifu John studying Kung Fu.  I feel very lucky to be associated with someone so dedicated as he.  I have been acquainted with several “masters” through the years and Sifu John is the only one I know who practices his art on a daily basis and becomes more energized by it every day.  He is an inspiration to me every time I work out with him.”Mark enjoys teaching a sparring class every Monday night and loves to help people master the concepts of timing, distance, and speed. His favorite weapon is the Tiger Tail Broadsword, due to the way one flows with the weapon.  He is currently learning the Kwan Dao and loves the challenge it provides.  “Due to the weight and momentum of this weapon I am learning more than ever before how to move with it and make it an extension of myself” he says.  Always looking to the future, he is thinking the rope dart might hold some interesting challenges to be overcome.Mark’s favorite form is Fu Hok Seung Ying Kuen (Tiger and Crane Matching Fist form). “I first saw this form being practiced by Sifu John and just knew I had to learn it.  It is a beautiful blend of internal and external movements and encompasses many of the elegant and powerful movements of Hung Gar.”

Mark loves the challenge that Hung Gar provides and the different training practices that he has learned in Hung Gar.  “I especially like Iron Palm because of the discipline required and the barriers it helps you to overcome.  If you can break a concrete block with the palm of your hand, what could possibly stand in your way in life?”

Victor Chu, Age 45, Black Sash, 1st level

Staying healthy, exercising right, eating right are key concerns in my life as I grow older and find that the old joints and muscles no longer reacted and responded to rest the same when I was young.  Getting up to a cardio level of exercise has been a continual process in my life.  I enjoyed volleyball and swimming.  But as my children got into martial arts, I decided that the traditional chinese martial arts, Hung Gar, is a valuable endeavor, worth investing time and energy.

Favorite form:  Five Animal & Five Elements (Sup Ying Kuen)

Weapons:  Butterfly Knives and Straight Sword

Chris Maloney - Si Hing

Chris Maloney, Age: 23, Brown Sash

When I started watching kung fu movies in college, I never imagined that someday I would be learning martial arts in the direct lineage of Wong Fei Hung and Lam Sai Wing, people who seemed more like myths from a far away land and time. Yet hidden in a tiny pocket of Newark DE, I discovered a school teaching authentic Shaolin kung fu, and once I signed up it didn't take long until I was totally obsessed. What I enjoy most about Hung Gar is its mystical component, which not all martial arts possess; growing stronger is not just a physical process for me but a spiritual one as well. For this reason I like practicing dragon forms and meditations, the most mystical of our style. Chris' favorite weapon is Monkey King Staff.

For a long time, I had been reading different spiritual books. I was going through some hard times when I came across a Tai chi book and it interested me, so I bought a few Tai chi and Chi gung videos. I was intrigued and I wanted to learn more about traditional martial arts

In many of the Kung Fu movies I watched, the main character would be a mess and then he would find peace and enlightenment through Kung Fu. Since I needed something positive in my life, I began looking for a school on the internet. I checked out several places and Tiger Crane seemed the most professional. I stopped by the kwoon to check out a class, I was excited to see the students training.

After talking to Si Fu John and seeing how genuinely kind hearted he was, I knew this was where I belonged.

I love Hung Gar Kung Fu and I look forward to doing it for the rest of my life.
